Ireland Atlantic Coast

Just settling back into our drive we stopped again a short time later as Carrickahowley Castle came into view. It was one of 11 castles that Grace O'Malley, sea trader but some say pirate queen, owned in the 1500s. At the height of her career she controlled much of the Irish west coast. When the tide is in small ships can get up near here. This fortifed dwelling was her main residence and she withstood a 21 day seige by English soldiers here in 1574.
